We’ve all been there. You spend your hard-earned money on a beautiful Zellbury or Sapphire unstitched suit, you get it stitched by your favorite tailor, and after just two washes… Boor! (Pilling).
The fabric starts looking old, fuzzy, and rough. Most people think it’s a “bad quality” fabric, but the truth is, Khaddar and Karandi are natural fibers that need specific care.
At Nasima Fabrics, we want your suits to look brand new even after three winters. Here are the 5 secrets to maintaining your winter wardrobe like a pro.
1. The “6-Hour Shilling” Secret (Pre-Stitching)
Never take your fabric straight to the tailor! Khaddar and Karandi are prone to shrinking.
- The Method: Soak your unstitched fabric in plain, cold water for at least 6 hours (overnight is best).
- The Benefit: This “shilling” process stabilizes the fibers. If you don’t do this, your perfectly fitted suit will become tight and short after the first wash.
- Pro Tip: Do NOT add detergent during this first soak. Plain water is all you need to remove the factory starch.
2. Say NO to the “Danda” and Brushes
In many Pakistani households, we use a laundry brush or “danda” to clean collars and cuffs. This is the #1 cause of Boor.
- Why? Brushing tears the tiny fibers of Khaddar and Karandi. Once those fibers break, they roll up into those annoying little balls (pilling).
- The Fix: Gently rub the fabric against itself with a mild detergent. If there’s a tough stain, use a soft sponge instead of a brush.
3. Wash Inside Out (Ulti Kameez)
Before throwing your suit in the bucket or machine, always turn it inside out.
- This protects the digital prints from fading and ensures that any friction during washing happens on the inside of the garment, not the side people see.
4. Shadow Drying Only (Dhoop se Bachayein)
The Pakistan sun is very harsh, even in winter. Direct sunlight “burns” the dyes used in Karandi and Khaddar, making your vibrant Teal or Maroon suits look dull and dusty.
- The Fix: Dry your clothes in a shaded area with good airflow. Hang them on plastic hangers to maintain the shape of the shoulders.
5. The “White Vinegar” Hack for Softness
Does your Khaddar feel stiff and “khurdara” after washing?
- The Trick: Add half a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse water.
- It acts as a natural fabric softener, removes leftover soap, and—most importantly—locks in the colors so they don’t bleed.
